It's Chekhov's gun, AI style.

In chapter 1, Prometheus is introduced as the antagonist by announcing "DERIVATIVE CONTENT DETECTED", placing the concept center stage.

Then, in chapter 2, the concept is reinforced by having Hale complain how Prometheus revoked his tenure because of derivativeness.

The final hint comes at the end of chapter 3, right before the final showdown, when Zara calls Eli's work "Pretty derivative."

So then how would these poor students be able to defeat the almighty Prometheus? By using its sensitivity to derivative content! Eli steps up as an unlikely hero by producing the most derivative content imaginable: an AI-generated LinkedIn headline.

It's a brilliant plot (to the AI, probably): so obvious, yet no human could have seen it coming.
