"The air smelled of turpentine and regret." Is it just me or does AI like to assign smells to emotions? It always throws me for a loop.

Fully agree. While I'm aware some writers like to use sensory language, this is one thing I have seen too often with AI. It's always "x smelled like y and z", with z being something smell-less, like an emotion. Usually it opens a paragraph, just to make it extra obnoxious.

To my mind, the story is an attempt to be all mystical yet mysterious.

I see what you mean. The mystery doesn't really lead anywhere. This may be because this particular AI is incapable of producing a coherent story. I'll give it a few more tries and then probably return to DeepSeek.
